Every technical festival is sure to have events which are innovative, engaging and hence attract a huge participation. The ‘Featured events’ are the most-awaited and widely attended events of all in the Matrix. Here are the events of Matrix 2k17 which created their mark and left a lasting impact on the participants-
Virtual Stock Market- Think Before you invest!
Virtual Stock Market was one of the mega events of the technical festival Matrix which experienced a huge response from the students. More than 372 registrations were seen on both days combined. The event was held on 15th and 16th September’17. The event was conducted at the SPIT entrance itself. The organizing committee consisting of 11 second-year students who gave their best to make the event a success. The motto of the committee was to give an idea of the stock market and it’s functioning to the participants. The stocks were bought and sold through an app given to the participants at the start of the event. A story was narrated and there were four rounds held to earn profits (else endure a loss). The story was based on four different species fighting for their survival on Earth. Using the above storyline, VSM managed to win ‘Best Incorporation of theme ‘Retrofuture” award. After every round, the team earning maximum profits won goodies and in the end, cash prizes were distributed.
Everyone had pulled up their socks after round 1 and towards the end, every heart skipped a beat when the screens flashed and the winners were announced. Arth Patel and Aditya managed to maximise their profits on Day 1 and 2 respectively earning themselves a cash prize of ₹10,000 each. 1st and 2nd runner-ups won a cash prize of ₹ 7500 and ₹ 5000 respectively. A total of ₹45,000 cash prizes were distributed to the winners. No one from the venue left empty-handed. Some won cash prizes and goodies while the rest earned some stock knowledge.
Virtual Placements: An early start
The tech fest MATRIX brought about many events but the heart of the two-day extravaganza started off a week prior with pre-event rounds of Virtual Placements. This was an innovation in which the organizers teamed up with professionals to provide students with an experience of the campus placements.
This event began with an aptitude test which assessed the logical ability of the students and was graded by IMS, the main sponsor for the event. Next, there was a technical skill round grading the academic knowledge of the students. This round was conducted in a digital lab setting to prevent confusion and unfair grading. Up ahead, the ‘GD’ i.e Group Discussion saw students sharing their opinions on a wide range of topics where they were marked by industry experts. The first three rounds were open for all the 220 participants after which 75 were selected for the HR interview conducted by professionals. The winners Anish Dixit, Rohan Pawar and Ayush Kamath received cash prizes. The event left the students of S.P.I.T reeling for more!!!

Technical Paper Presentation
Technical Papers are essential intellectual properties of any person belonging to any technical field. It is necessary that an individual has the perfect skill-set to do so.
On the 16th September, a competition for Technical Paper Presentation was held as a part of technical fest of Sardar Patel Institute of Technology “Matrix-The Retro Future”. This competition helped to provide a common ground to all the aspiring engineers from different colleges to showcase their technical skill-set in the form of Technical Papers.
The event commenced at 9 am, with the introduction and felicitation of the judges. The judges were Prof. Govind Haldankar, Prof. Sanika Shaikh, Prof. Harshil Kanakia who judged the participants with their valuable experience and their expertise in their respective technical fields.
The participants from various colleges across Mumbai were already requested to register beforehand because their papers had to be scrutinized and analyzed. The participants were given the best possible opportunity to present their innovative ideas and they were strictly made to follow the IEEE format because the Organizing Team tried their best to simulate the event to a professional level.
Around 30 innovative ideas were presented in the competition. They were judged based on Content and Knowledge Presentation, Visual Aids and Neatness, Delivery and Speaking Skills, Listening Skills and their receptiveness to the questions being asked by the panel.
After the presentation of all the ideas, the winners were announced on basis of the marks given to them after the evaluation of their papers and presentation.
The Winners were:
- First Place: Krishna Shivnarayan Sahu, Vinaykumar Ramnarayan Yadav, VJTI, Topic: Meditron
- Second Place: Sagar Wadhwa, Sahil Mirchandani, Jeenisha Mansharamani, Vivekanand Education Society’s Institute of Technology (VESIT), Topic: Optimized Rescue System
- Consolation Prize: Mayur Sanap, SPIT, Topic: Hydrobot
- Consolation Prize: Rahul Birwadkar, VIT, Topic: E-Waste
At the end of the event, prizes and certificates were handed to the winners by the Judges. IEEE certified participation certificates were given to all the participants. Thus, the event concluded at 4.00 pm with winners as well as participants getting a professional technical experience which gave them a kick-start for the betterment of their career.
“The Response from the participants was overwhelming which made the event successful. It was the first time that such an event was held in Matrix. The Team worked quite hard to make this event amazing”, said Nisha Shetty, TE Electronics, Organizing Member, Team Technical Paper Presentation.
Project Exhibition
Each one has had a phase during which they wished they could flaunt to the world an idea, a creation of their own. ‘Project Exhibition’ was an event organized by the F.E.T.S Committee held on the second day of the two-day magnificent venture – Matrix. It compromised of extremely accomplished students, representing various technical institutions across the city, creatively display an innovative idea through a project at this event.The projects were marked by an experienced panel of judges consisting of Prof. Reena Sonkusare from the EXTC Department, and Mihir Shah, alumni of Sardar Patel Institute of Technology. The first prize, awarded to the most innovative project, was bagged by Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology and the winning project was ‘Omni Crawler’. Cash prizes were also rewarded to VPM Polytechnic as a runner-up prize for their project ‘Garbage Box'′. The response of the students was overwhelming; the participants found it to be quite informative as they got acquainted with the possible scope for improvement in their project. “The result was an impressive showcase of innovative projects from different domains with the hard work of the participants showing through. It was an enriching experience for us as well”, said Apurva Gaonkar, VCP, F.E.T.S committee.
Each event added some worth to the participants’ knowledge and skill base. The hard work, technical prowess and effective implementation of fresh ideas, by all organizing teams, was reflected and undoubtedly, made all events a huge success.
