LINUX WORKSHOP BY IETE

Linux is certainly an exception to the rule- “Nothing in life comes for free.” Even then, Linux is no mug when it comes to performance and reliability. This is because of the way this operating system was first developed. All of this began when Linus Torwalds started writing a kernel as a hobby and nothing “big and professional”.  Now, developers use Linux on a large scale for web servers, networking and in numerous other domains. Users from all round the globe continue to add new features. Updates with stability improvements roll out even today. The simple and versatile nature of this language is the key to why it’s so widely used.

Considering this, IETE organized a workshop on Linux. The workshop was conducted by Prof. Dayanand Ambawade. Prof. Ambawade did his B.E in Electronics and pursued his M.Tech in Communications at IIT Bombay. He has a teaching experience of over 15 years and has particular interest in network architecture and protocol, and has also published well known books on the subject. He has conducted several workshops on Linux Systems in addition to other topics like Mobile Computing and System Security.  With his 18 years of experience in the field, Dr Ambawade gave an experience to the SPITians that they would never forget.

Every student of SPIT is exposed to Linux. Every desktop has it, every FE learns coding on Linux. With such a frequent interaction, it is essential for every student to not only understand this platform, but also learn to use it optimally. Sir began the session with familiarising the students with the Linux environment. He taught basic codes, simple commands to help the students adapt to the software.

With the use of such commands, Dr. Ambawade started integrating basic engineering concepts, like creating webpages, and accessing them from command prompt. Hiding files, viewing hidden files. Finding viruses, killing them; the functionalities were limitless.
Especially in this day and age, with our generation completely engrossed in video games, it’s a special treat to learn command prompt cheat codes 😉

Having explained the security features of Linux, sir went on to elaborate on how to use command prompt to exploit all that the OS provides. He then touched upon creating secure terminals while using the OS, making the user a more efficient coder.

The workshop proved to be a very enriching experience for those who attended. The organizing committee concluded the event by offering a vote of thanks and a token of appreciation to Dr. Ambawade, whose words will stay with the students and surely help them in the years to come.
