S.P.I.T. MUN – 2018

If you want to know the nitty-gritty of the functioning of the United Nations, while exploring how to maintain diplomatic relations, going to a Model United Nations (MUN) conference will satisfy your curiosity, and the S.P.I.T.-MUN, an established haven, certainly did not fall short of fulfilling the promise of delivering the perfect immersion of politics and foreign policies over comprehensive yet fun discussions and deliberations. Marking the beginning of the Cultural fest of S.P.I.T., UDAAN 2K18, S.P.I.T.-MUN opened with fervor, reinstating the standard of the fest, yet again.

One of the biggest and the most promising MUNs of this year, SPIT-MUN commenced with a speech by the General Secretary, Rithvika Iyer on the morning of 27th January. Nearly a hundred students from colleges all over Mumbai participated as delegates representing several countries. There were four committees: the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Disarmament and International Security (DISEC) and to add a little Indian flair to a classic MUN, the Lok Sabha. The Executive Board consisted of known names from the MUNing community with years of experience and expertise, who made sure that the whole event was seamless for the first timers as well. The debates revolved around various current affairs, ranging from LGBTQ+ rights to the threat of ISIS. The day ended with a fun-filled motion for entertainment.

The following day saw equally enthusiastic delegates determined to consolidate their point across to the Committees.
The delegates of DPRK-UNHRC, China-UNSC, Iraq-DISEC, Rajnath Singh-Lok Sabha were a few of the many who made their mark, being seasoned MUNers themselves.

“SPIT-MUN was bigger and better than last year and that is a huge compliment considering the fact that last year was awesome.”, Jagannathan Iyengar, the co-chair of Lok Sabha.

It was an enriching experience for both the Organizing Committee as well as the delegates.

“It wouldn’t have been such a hit if it weren’t for the collective and tireless efforts of the entire team who made this event one of a kind”, shared the General Secretary, Rithvika Iyer.

The two-day conference ended on a high note, leaving all of Mumbai anxiously waiting on the edge of its seat for UDAAN 2K18.
