Spoorthi – Outdoor 1

Spoorthi, the annual sports festival of SPIT took place from 13th to 31st January 2020. With a plethora of sports activities in store, it offered a competitive ambience for sports enthusiasts from all over the city to showcase their talents.

Athletics:

“Don’t play for what your jersey says on the back, play for what it says on the front”, with this notion began the athletic events of Spoorthi on 25th January,2020.

The event commenced with 100m races for the boys. Harsh Rana from Father Agnel Collge,Vasai bagged the gold medal and Gaurang Gorasiya won the silver medal. This was followed by the 200m races where Harsh Rana, again, secured the first position and Prithvi Poojary from Thakur College of Engineering won the second position. Saroj Shetty from Rizvi college secured the gold medal and Manjusha Shetty from Suraj college stood second in both the 100m and 200m races in the girls category.

Next in line were the 400m races. Tanesh Mankar from Vartak College stood first while Niraj Pawar from Saijale College came second among the boys. Among the girls, Saroj Shetty won while Dakshata Patil, from Sardar Patel College of Engineering was the runner up.

After a short break, many more events took place such as long-jump,shot-put and relay races.

Volleyball:

The volleyball tournament was conducted on the 18th and 19th of January,2020. There were separate tournaments for the boys and the girls, with 10 teams in the boys’ category and 5 in the girls’. Khalsa college were the winners and Vidyalankar Institute Of technology bagged the runner-up title among the boys. While Terna college and Usha Mittal Institute of Technology secured the first and the second positions respectively among the girls.

Marv Dunphy, an American volleyball player and coach, once quoted :

“Volleyball is a game of intuition and imagination, but most of all, of teamwork. There is no way to freelance volleyball.” Every person who took part in the tournament, portrayed immense sportsmanship and team spirit, thus making the event both fair and competitive.

Throwball:

The throwball tournament was conducted on the 26th of January,2020. The atmosphere was electrifying with 6 teams from VJTI, Shah and Anchor, Thakur college, KEM, ICT, Bhavans and VIT taking part in the tournament. The event was marked with exciting, nail-biting matches in almost every elimination round.

The final took place between SPIT and Thakur College. A surge of emotion struck the audience and there was a loud round of applause when the final whistle blew announcing SPIT as the winners of the tournament.

Basketball:

Basketball was organised for the first team during Spoorthi this year. A total of eleven teams participated in the tournament. St. Arnold’s College bagged the first place while MKM (Mithibai Motiram Kundani ) came second.

“It was my first experience of organising a sport event .In spite of several hurdles throughout the journey, it was indeed encouraging and satisfying to see that the event was pulled off successfully”, said Harsh Pandita, the event organizer.

“Organizing an event so big might seem very difficult but it actually was a lot of fun!We had also introduced a lot of new things this time.The strong support from our team was the reason we could pull it off and we did!”, said Krisha Choksi, the Sports Secretary.
